Theo hướng dẫn hội tim mạch châu Âu năm 2018, THA được xác định dựa trên giá trị huyết áp tâm thu (HATT) tại phòng khám lặp lại là 140 mmHg và/ hoặc huyết áp tâm trương (HATTR) là 90 mmHg. Tuy nhiên, có mối quan hệ liên tục giữa huyết áp (HA) và bệnh lí tim mạch hoặc bệnh thận hoặc tử vong bắt đầu từ giá trị HA tại phòng khám với HATT > 115 mmHg và HATTR >75 mmHg [1], [12].
